Someone is always controlling other people, and someone is always controlling them. The book shows Ender being dictated by his commanders and his teachers. The government is regulating the teachers. It is like a society pyramid, but instead of a person, humanity is at the top. “With the fate of the humanity in our hands. Gives you a delicious feeling of power doesn’t it?” (38).
1: What possible themes do you see emerging? I see a theme that Ender is trying to make his way around in battle school. He is also taking to the school well, eliminating the “Alpha Males” from their respective positions. He is becoming a leader, and genius amongst the other attendees. His “Isolation” has been broken and he is becoming ready for war. Aboard the launch, he broke the left arm of Bernard, and then hacked the computer systems to send fake messages from his account. This shows that he is perfectly capable of improvising and adapting to the changing environment of battle school.
A possible theme could be that there is more to being a leader than just having people to lead. Throughout the story, Ender Wiggin shows his incredible leadership skills in several battle simulations at Battle School. His ability to make launchies, and failing veterans into future battle commanders, and his very effective and unique battle strategy are things that the students, recruiters, and colonels have never seen before. Evidence from the text says "Ender stayed and helped the younger soldiers improve on technique"(164). Also, Ender’s army goes undefeated and never loses, even against the best commanders and two armies at once. Ender’s leadership proves that commanders and other leaders must actually have organization, and use their intelligence to lead others and be successful.
